Taking It Easy in the Post-Partum Period

After a woman gives birth, she may have many emotions and expectations. She may be excited about finally meeting her baby for the first time, and happy to get to know him. She may be exhausted from a difficult delivery and worried about how she will handle the demands of a newborn in the first few weeks.  She may also be ready to get life back to normal after a long pregnancy and eager to lose her baby weight quickly.

So many emotions and thoughts assault a woman in the first few days after her delivery.  Some of these feelings are due to hormone levels adjusting after pregnancy ends and lactation begins. Some feelings are just due to fatigue and the changes that a woman must face with a new baby. Many women experience conflicting or negative feelings after childbirth, but these feelings do not mean that a woman is a bad mother. However, holding the negative feelings inside will only make them worse.  Women should trust those around them, confiding in friends and family about these issues.  If a woman ever feels as if she cannot cope with these feelings or considers hurting herself or her child, she should immediately call her doctor.  The doctor will be able to inform her of the best route to emotional peace.

Most women decide before giving birth whether or not they will breastfeed their babies. Some are surprised that breastfeeding can be tricky to learn. If a mother is determined, she can almost always make the nursing process work.  Many women have found help and support from the La Leche League.  If after two or three weeks, breastfeeding is still not going well, a woman should not feel as if she is a failure. Plenty of women raise happy, healthy babies while feeding them formula from a bottle.

Many mothers think that once delivery is over they don’t have to make any more important medical decisions until the first appointment with the pediatrician. However, post-delivery there are some optional decisions a mother can make, like circumcision and cord blood banking. Cord blood banking is where cord blood is collected immediately following delivery and is stored in a private facility. The benefit of cord blood banking is that the cord blood can potentially be used in the future to help a treat medical illness.

After a woman gives birth, she should take it easy for several weeks. Even after three or four weeks, when the soreness and fatigue from delivery begins to lessen, a woman should be careful not to overexert herself. Although many women are anxious to lose their pregnancy weight, breastfeeding women should not diet excessively. This can cause a woman’s milk supply to lessen, and the baby will suffer from it. Women should be sensible about eating when nursing, so the baby will not be shortchanged.

All women should be careful about jumping right back into an exercise routine in the weeks immediately after delivery. They should gradually work up their endurance and pay attention to how they feel. Women should allow themselves plenty of energy to tend to the baby, and not go overboard with exercise right away.

Although it may seem like it will take a long time to get life back to normal, for most women, the first few weeks of a baby’s life passes all too quickly. A woman should be patient with her body and make caring for her infant the main priority in the post-partum weeks.
